Site and forum news, notes, announcements etc

Postby blu » 13 Nov 2012

Apologies from me. I've been neglecting you.

A few reasons, but most pressing over the past 10 days or so is a massive HDD failure on my my main PC which has sadly lost me a bunch of stuff. I've been spending a lot of time trying to extract what I can, but my time has been very limited.

One of the things that we promised on these forums was active moderation.

Will do better and be around more. Thanks for being patient.

With the spambots having picked up again recently I've added reCaptcha to the registration page rather than the simple security question we had there. Let's hope that's a bit more successful in keeping them out.

Damn, it took days to come up with that question. I can only imagine the legions of spam bots surrendered in front of it. :D

Your question might have been better, Bob. Woke up to half a dozen new spam threads this morning which is really unusual. I've turned registration so that users have to be activated by an admin for the time being until I work out how to tackle this problem.

Sorry to hear about the hard drive. That stinks.

Cheers. Yeah, it's a real pain. Managed to recover most "valuable" stuff, but sometimes you don't know what you've lost until you come to look for it. All my video projects in Adobe Premiere are lost, I think.

In other news I've got quite a group of spambots stuck in purgatory, and more being added with each passing hour. I'll have a fiddle with the security settings later to see if I can stop them getting past the first hurdle of the registration page.

Yikes!

And another one that got through - Maximuslop, posting in the Other Films section.

Okay.

Have gone back to a security question to register. Something's that related to the film and hopefully straightforward, but unique enough to keep out the bots. I had no new pending users in 4 hours since I changed it compared to 1 or 2 an hour before that. Hopefully it's sorted it.

Cleared out about 15 pending registrations that were entirely bots (all from today!), and probably 30-40 other pending registrations that were people who didn't activate via email. Those 30-40 had stacked up over the last 18 months or so.

Hopefully that's sorted it but will keep a close eye on the forum this evening/tomorrow morning.

Small note

I changed the edit window on new posts to 30 minutes. I thought that I had done this AGES ago, but must have forgotten. I hate holes in thread discussions. If there are arguments to the contrary, happy to hear them.

If anyone has anything something particular that they want to remove/change but can't because the edit window has expired, drop me a PM.

Cheers

Half an hour is a bit harsh! I'm constantly finding errors in my posts. And for long posts with multiple images etc it takes way longer than that to resize, etc.

Can we make it 24 hours? Given the frequency of posts on the forum that won't create problems will it?

Hm, yeah, maybe you're right.

I'll see if there are any other views, but happy to leave it longer if that would be helpful. I don't really want to encourage unnecessary multiple posting if I can help it.

Exactly what happened to me yesterday!

On a totally different point, is it possible for posts to be numbered for easy cross referencing?

Done. Editing time = 2160 minutes, or 36 hours. Thanks for the nudge.
